THE ROBIN HOOD

“The Robin Hood” Public House in, surprise, surprise, Robin Hood Road is sadly no longer an Inn, once the spiritual home of the also-gone, but never-forgotten Elsenham Football Club. Sorry to say, the demise of the Village’s Eleven contributed to its demise. Our own “Footy” boys drank the Pub dry at least once. Their disbanding was a great loss to Ernie & Rennee Atkinson’s income.

Now, to mention Renee Atkinson without commenting on her gastronomic delights would be a sad thing. The “Hood” was also the home of the local darts Team. Halfway through a Match against a visiting team, Renee would appear with a tray groaning under the weight of her signature dish, “The Onion Sandwich.” These sandwiches were just ONIONS; I never found even a trace of butter or some other lubricant. The thinking was that if one imbibed heavily on my host’s fare, one would buy copious quantities of BEER.

However, these aforementioned sandwiches had an unfortunate side effect. Firstly, the Pub had a low ceiling and room was somewhat restricted. After about 30 minutes, the fumes issuing from a vast quantity of eats would become almost unbearable.

Then, a little later, one would encounter multiple people all having extreme bowel movements; say no more.

Having mentioned the room height and the fact that “Arrows” would be thrown, it is only right to comment on one characteristic of play. Many quickly learned if you threw a dart so it glanced off the ceiling, you could get a “double-top.” This type of play was frowned upon, and cries of “You cheating B” would be heard.

In one corner of the room, seemingly oblivious to the proceedings, sat the “Robin Hood Domino Team.” These guys had a language all of their own. It consisted of the occasional grunt when someone laid a double six, moving on to two grunts when the last domino was laid.

Next time we move on to the “Crown” Inn. Now there was one customer who had a pint of Beer with a pickled onion in it! Cheers and Beers.
